At Mass the people who power our business have stories that matter. We caught up with Renewables team member Dominic Cantwell (Dom) for a Q&A about his career to date and his path into recruitment.

Tell us about your background before coming to Mass

I’m English originally and came to Australia on a working holiday visa, and did scaffolding in Perth for two years.

How was that?

It was hard work! Scaffolding is physically demanding and I was working in very hot temperatures.

How did the idea of working in recruitment come about?

Will Eastwood, my now manager, supplied my brother, a Site Supervisor, with labourers and one night, out at the pub, I got introduced to him. Will said that he thought I’d be good for recruitment and asked if I had ever considered it, which I hadn’t, but it sounded interesting.

What was interesting about it?

Working indoors, not doing such a physically demanding job and having more stability and security over my roster and working hours was a big thing! Helping people find work seemed appealing and working in Will’s team focusing on the Renewable sector was also interesting – there’s so much growth and investment in green energy that I saw massive potential for myself.

How did you find starting out in recruitment?

It was good – coming from a trades background meant I knew what candidates did and could relate to them easily. Mass was great at easing me into the job and gave me good training so I was always learning and felt supported.

How are things currently?

10 months in and I’m feeling good about my role and my future career in recruitment. I’m getting great feedback from my workers on-site and how they feel about my service and support. As a result, lots of them stay loyal and move with me from project to project so I’m keeping them constantly working and earning. If anyone is looking for work as an electrician or trade assistant and has experience in solar farms or renewable energy, please get in touch with me!

What about the future?

I see myself progressing and taking on more responsibility. Mass is a great place to work, whether you’re new to recruitment or not, and there’s lots of support and a great culture here. The Renewables sector I recruit for is interesting and exciting; we’ve got a big project on at the moment that I’m sourcing for and there are plenty of more in the pipeline. It’s busy! We’re looking to hire another experienced recruiter to join our team so that’s also exciting – anyone interested should reach out to our Talent & Training Manager, Michael Jones!

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dom, good luck with your ongoing recruitment career at Mass!
